Before you buy a used recreational vehicle, make sure that you know what it is that you’re getting yourself into. Not all vehicles are as good as people think they are. Also, there are a lot of people out there that are not entirely honest about what they do or what they say. For this reason, it is important that you take the time to inspect an RV before you buy it. If you do not know a lot about mechanics or about inspecting RVs, take it to a mechanic shop and have them do the inspection for you. You should be capable enough to do the inspection of the interior, the exterior, and all of the appliances. If you really don’t feel comfortable with doing this part of the inspection, you could probably ask a handyman to come along and do this part of the inspection for you. It wouldn’t be a bad idea considering the fact that a lot of used motorhomes still cost over $50,000.
The next step is, before you buy a recreational vehicle, you should decide exactly what it is that you want to buy. Find out what that type of RV is worth, and set a goal for a price you want to get it for. Most of the time, it is not too difficult to buy cars and RVs for 20% less than the blue book value, but you need to be able to spend the time looking at a lot of RVs, and you also need to be able to find people who are slightly more motivated than average, if you’re going to be able to get that good of a discount.
When you’re buying RVs for sale by owner, you are most certainly going to get a better deal than when you buy them from dealers. Used RVs for sale by owner can and often are sold for at or below blue book. If you want to get a good deal, find out what the blue book value is, and then try and save yourself at least 20%.
